Service dogs are trained to assist people who use wheelchairs, walkers, crutches or canes. They are taught to pull manual wheelchairs, turn lights on and off, pushing elevator buttons, retrieve dropped or hard to reach items, make purchases or banking transactions, open and close doors and drawers, bark to get help and provide stability for walking. In addition, these dogs help to serve as an ice-breaker in public situations and provide constant companionship for their partners.

New Horizions Service Dogs
In July of 2009 we developed our prison program in collaboration with the Florida Department of Corrections. Through this program we are able to have great everyday training for future service dogs provided by the prisoners while the prisoners are in return learning skills necessary to re-enter society. We currently have 2 programs:
Sago Palm Work Camp in Pahooke, Fl.

Our program began on 08/13/04. We, the Safe Harbor Team brought a small group of unwanted dogs into the Lansing Correctional Facility in Lansing, KS.
The Safe Harbor Prison Dog Program's number one goal is saving the lives of as many dogs as we can, providing them with a safe harbor, and giving them a second chance at life. We rescue dogs mainly from high-kill animal shelters across the Midwest. The dogs then go to the prison, where we have approximately 100 inmates trained to be dog handlers who foster the dogs. The handlers take great pride in their work and do a wonderful job. The handlers work tremendously on socialization with the dogs at first, then they work with the dogs on housetraining and leash training, and basic commands. Preparing them for their new "Forever Homes".

Pen Pals of San Quentin is a unique program jointly operated by The Marin Humane Society and San Quentin State Prison in which selected inmates learn to socialize and train dogs to prepare them for placement with families in the community. The Marin Humane Society (MHS) is a community-based shelter and this program enables more animals’ lives to be saved while, at the same time, making a difference for the community by providing a positive program for our resident prison. The Marin Humane Society rehabilitates dogs medically and behaviorally to make them better adoption candidates, and this often requires a lengthy stay in a foster situation. The dogs need someone’s time – and the inmates have it! So the dogs benefit by being with their handlers 24/7 and becoming better socialized and better trained so that they’ll fit in easily with their future adoptive families.

The Lee County Cell Dogs Program is a unique partnership between The Lee County Sheriff's Office, Lee County Animal Services, Companion Dog Training Center, and Hill's Pet Nutrition.
The Cell Dogs Program places homeless shelter dogs to be obedience trained by carefully selected inmates. The dog training program, taught by volunteers from Companion Dog Training Center, teaches inmates how to obedience train dogs during an intensive 8 to 16 week course.
Upon graduation, the dogs are highly adoptable and possess obedience skills such as how to heel, sit, recall, and stay. They are also housed trained, leash trained and responsive to voice commands and some hand signals.

The St. Joseph Bay Humane Society is proud to announce its DAWGS in Prison program, a joint effort with Gulf Correctional Institution.
All of the dogs selected for this program go through an intense 8-week training session and live with their trainers, handlers and caretakers in a dormitory style work camp. All of these dogs have had an extensive temperament test and get along well with other dogs and people

The canine HART program is a partnership between the Animal Service Center and Wakulla Correctional Institute (WCI) in Wakulla Florida. The program began on May 10, 2010 and aims to assist dogs undergoing canine heartworm disease treatment and recovery to increase their adoptability.
All Animal Service Center dogs participating in the HART program must be heartworm positive upon entry to the program. Each dog screened and selected for the program has received treatment for their otherwise deadly parasitic disease prior to being housed at WCI and rehabilitated and fostered through treatment. These dogs remain in the correctional institute for 3 months during their recovery while simultaneously receiving basic obedience training.
